The idea of this incense originates from the natural and cultural environment of Quanzhou. Although vetiver is not native to China, its character—rooted deeply in the earth, tough and solid—resonates with Minnan(south Fujian)’s geography and spirit. In Minnan, plants have to adapt to nutrient-poor red soil, rocky mountains, relentless coastal winds, and rapid evaporation. Like vetiver, they drive deep roots into rocky crevices to draw nutrients and water.
Unlike the Central Plains culture, from political and economic dominance, Minnan (Southern Fujian) culture reflects the ocean’s spirit. Its landscape—”eight mountains, one river, one farmland”—posed resource scarcity in old times. Facing this, the Minnan people have to explore the seas. Amid raging waves and uncertainty, the inner faith enables them to find inner peace and stability. Like vetivers rooted in rock, they carved paths through adversity, blossoming orchid-like fragrances through harsh environments
This incense uses vetiver as a base note, accented by rhubarb (大黄) and frankincense. Rhubarb, when processed, emits a delicate floral freshness, which was used to imitate blossoms in traditional formulae. Balanced by frankincense, vetiver’s warm and steady, earthy scent adds depth of floral richness. Like a sweet-smelling orchid standing independently in a rocky valley. In a turbulent world, it helps anchor to solid ground, dissolving tension and anxiety, and restoring people’s grounded energy.
